Christmas Wishlist

It is officially the month of gift buying and gift giving! Only 24 more days till Christmas and I haven't started buying gifts for my family or even for myself. I was of course busy with my move here in the province and I'm still adjusting to life here. Anyway, I've decided to make a wish list for myself (hoping somebody might give it to me!).

1) Brand new car
2) Trip to Macau
3) Ipod touch/Ipot Nano
4) A ferris wheel ride in London
5) Gondola ride in Italy
6) More time with my family

Of course, most of them are wishful thinking, but not entirely feasible. Like the ipod touch/ipod nano which are carried by anybody these days. With it being handy and fashionable, who wouldn't want one? The others on the list, well, I'll be hoping that Santa would pass by my blog and make my wish a reality.

Things I did'nt know I could do

Since I moved here in the province, a lot of things have changed. I have made a list of the things I did not do when I was in manila, but was brave enough to do it here:

1) Go to the wet market - first of all, I don't like going to one since I don't like the smell when I go to one. The floors are usually slippery, when you buy meat or fish, the smell usually sticks to your hand. They don't have sinks there where you can wash your dirty hands. But, I did it here, on my own. I haggle with the vendors, put my hands on stinky fish, and just enjoy the place. Mind you, their market here is pretty clean compared to the others I went to ( I sometimes accompany my mom when I was in manila).

2) Sample unusual food - this is still connected to the market thing. This happened on my first visit. I want to buy beef, and I went to the market after lunch (which was a bad time) and looked for beef. My SIL pointed out a stall that was selling what looked to be beef. So I bought some and was planning on cooking beef nilaga. When I boiled it, there was this unpleasant smell coming out of the pot. When my husband tasted it, he said I was not cooking beef, but carabao! My goodness, carabao in the market! Anyway, I ate it anyway since it tasted a little bit like beef, andmy husband said I should at least try what I cooked, but I steered clear of the stall that sells it in the market.

3) Get up early - since my househelp doesn't know how to cook, I do the cooking here. Anyway, its not really a chore since I love to cook. I just wish that I could sleep more in the morning.

4) Walk for blocks and blocks - since I'm new here, I prefer to walk to my destination to see the neighborhood firsthand. The mall, church, market, and all other significant places are all walking distance from my house. In manila, were so accostumed to our cars that we sometimes forget that it's nice to just walk around and enjoy your surroundings. But of course, there's nothing to see in manila but smoke and smog.

For now, that's all I've been doing here. With each passing day, I am enjoying my stay here... =)

My Birthday Month

This post is to say the least, late. It's past my birthday already! Since I'm already here in the province and the date fell on a weekday, I celebrated my birthday without my family. But, I did celebrate it with my husband and in-laws. I cooked carbonara, made green salad and fruit salad, and they bought crispy pata. Hubby bought chocolate cake which was very sweet, since he usually does not do that. Although my family was not with me, I was happy my in-laws were nice enough to be there on my special day. I'm still adjusting here, but thank God, my family here are very supportive and caring and are willing to help me through my transition.

At Home At Last

Hello Techie World! I'm back after a leave of absence (about 7 days i guess). I missed blogging! My son and I are now in the province with my husband. We've been here 4 days and already, I miss the fast-paced world of manila. Yep, life they say in the province is kinda slow, but, I was amazed that it isn't. Everytime I look at the clock, I feel that it's sprinting! It moves so fast! Maybe because here, I do a lot of cooking...which I did not do much when I was staying with my mom...unless it was a special occassion. That's when the "barefoot contessa" emerges. hehehe. So, how does it feel to be here? Well, it really puts me in the zone where the reality of being a mom and wife sets in. It's like living through college but with other responsibilites attached. FYI...I lived on my own during college, also in the province, away from my family...but of course back then, I'm only responsible for myself and not for other people. But who am I to complain? Because being here with my husband and son, feels like home. It makes me warm and fuzzy inside...it's like sitting in the kitchen, nursing a hot cocoa when there's a storm outside. Or cuddling with my sweetie and talking sweet nothings together. I know you get the picture... What I'm saying is that moving here is no sacrifice when you are surrounded with your loved ones. So here's a hooray to all those people who moved away from home to start their own family. I know now what that feels...happiness.

I was browsing thru old emails, and I stumbled upon this wonderful message from my fellow nawie, Momai Barrameda.... I'd like to think that I'm not the only one adjusting with married life... It's really different once you are at that stage where it's forever, compared to having a bf-gf relationship. I'm hoping things would turn great when you've been together a couple of years....

Strengthen the relationship and bond you have with your partner with these simple tips.

These are just some random thoughts and activities to help deepen your relationship.

Don't try to do all of them at once. Choose one or two that you feel would work for you and your spouse.

** Think of a behavior you each have that other people like or praise. Ask yourselves why you do this. Share with one another your feelings as you think about this behavior.

** Try not to interrupt when the other is talking. Wait to add your opinion until she/he is completely finished with what they have to say.

**Don't make your spouse your slave. Do things for them for a change. Bring him/her a drink, a snack, slippers, the remote, whatever...

** Be honest with yourselves, and write down some ways in which you manage to instill guilt in your spouse. Try for one week not to use these manipulative behaviors.

** Go to the library together and select a book to read together. Or if you are really not book people, get a movie. But don't just watch it, talk about afterwards.

** Discuss what first attracted you to each other. But, if your wife use to be 120lbs. and now she's put on a few over the years, please don't remind her. This is not the time to list physical characteristics. Be open and honest about each other's personalities.

** It's okay to dream a little. If money were not a problem or a consideration, what would the two of you be doing now or how would you be living your lives?

** Talk about your lives growing up. Share with one another your memories. Childhood makes us who we are as adults. you can really get in touch with each other by sharing your memories.

** Make some time for the two of you. Find a way to free up an afternoon or an evening where you won't be disturbed by phone calls, children, friends, work, school, etc and just be together.

**Always remember to respect each other!

Sleepy Monday

What a day it must have been for my little boy. He was sitting beside me at the sofa watching tv. I was as usual, txting my friends, not really looking at him at all. Then my sister suddenly said, "Ate, xter's already sleeping!". True enough, when I looked over to my side, there was my son, sleepily sucking his thumb. My sister immediately took the opportunity to take this picture...I closed my eyes for effect...hehehe

Time-out with Friends

Last sun, Oct. 26, I attended the baptism of the first child of my HS friend. Time really flies so fast that you don't really know how old you have become or how long you've known each other. We all met at Miriam HS in Quezon City. Back then, we were all in the same section, eventually we were separated on our third year. Some of them knew each other from Miriam GS, but I was a transferee from Assumption (big leap! hahaha!). I was the odd girl out, having the superiority complex of an Assumptionista, I thought I was superior than the Maryknollers. But their friendly attitude and warm welcome melted my icy heart and changed my opinion forever. Now, we are friends for more than a decade. Some have planted roots in other countries, still, we keep in touch. Lucky are those that find true friends. Glad I did.....

Feverish Thursday...Part 3...Viral Exanthem vs Urticaria

Thank God my son is getting better. His rashes are disappearing little by little, he's playful and active again! After visiting my son's pedia, she could not conclude whether its roseola or uticaria. She said that it could have manifested at the same time. Still, I'm thankful that everything is alright. Thank you fellow bloggers for the prayers and kind wishes. =)

Feverish Thursday..Part 2...Viral Exanthem

My son had fever for 2 days, ranging from 39.2-38.5, then subsided on the 3rd day. After which, small, red spots appeared on his arms, trunk, back, legs and face. It was minimal at first and I thought it was just insect bites until I saw that it has spread all over his body. I immediately went to the hospital er thinking it was some form of allergy, although my pedia said it was just roseola infantum (it is a viral infection in young children that causes a high fever followed by a rash), but she told me to go to the hospital for my peace of mind. The doctor in the ER told me it was urticaria (a skin condition characterized by wheals, usually caused by an allergic reaction). It made me think of what I gave him to have caused an allergic reaction. I for one has a history of yearly allergies, the cause was always different in each case. He was given an antihistamine for the rashes and he was diagnosed as a non-specific viral exanthem, which means of all the 6 viral exanthems, they don't know which one it is (First disease = Measles or rubeola , Second disease = Scarlet fever, Third disease = Rubella or German measles, Fourth disease = Filatov or Dukes disease, Fifth disease = Erythema infectiosum [slapped cheek syndrome], Sixth disease = Exanthem subitum or roseola infantum). Of all the viral exanthems, I'm putting my money on the 6th disease. I'll be going to my son's pedia today for follow-up, he still has the rashes and the cough and cold. It's really very tiring for me when my son is sick, especially now that my husband is not around. Hope he get's better soon.

Feverish Thursday

Waking up when you still want to sleep is really an effort. That's what I felt this morning, until I touched my son and realized he was feverish. It was still around 5:30am, and for me, that is still an ungodly hour to wake up. But the heat emanating from my son, jolted my sleeping brain, forcing me to stand up, take the thermometer, and try to assure myself that I'm just dreaming. After 3 minutes, I looked at the mercury thermometer and realized I wasn't dreaming. Xter has fever. His temperature was 38.5C. I quickly headed for his cabinet where I also keep his medicines, and looked for his paracetamol. Luckily, I still have some in stock and gave him 1 dose. I then sponged-bathe him and changed his nappy. As predicted, we both fell asleep. When we woke up, 3 hours later, I decided to bring him to his pedia, since he also has cough and cold. Physical exam findings revealed everything is normal, so I was advised to just support his medicine with fluids and lots of love.

This was the second time he got really sick. The first time was during one of those long weekends given by madam president. We decided to take this opportunity to spend time with his tatay. So we packed our things and went to the province. And stayed we did. We ended up spending our vacation in the hospital because he got himself a virus. During that time, he also had fever and could not eat or drink his milk. To avoid dehydration, we decided to have him hospitalized. I really cried of the thought of my son being hospitalized. But my husband assured me, its for the best. Of course, I should know that. But still, our motherly instincts wouldn't want our child to be pinned and proded. Yet, I know it is really for the best.

Now, my son is sick again. I hope whatever bacteria or virus it is, would go away. I don't want my son to be hospitalized again.

First Taste of Pizza

When my son started eating at 4 months, he didn't stop...Everyday, he would savor any food I give him and I would watch in expectation for his facial expression. I started giving him Earth's Best Cereals at 4 months, mixing his cereal with his milk. The look on his face said, "what's this mommy?", still he would open his mouth to taste this new dish. For the first 3 weeks, I would feed him solids once a day, after which, twice a day, then onwards to three times a day. My son is now 10 months old, and he was given a go signal by his pediatrician to eat any solids he likes, of course, with a little caution. Yesterday, he had his first taste of pizza! He loved it so much, he would clap everytime he takes a bite. I guess this means I would have an eating buddy soon.

Angelina Jolie apparently Breastfeeding on W magazine cover

It sure is a different generation right now for Hollywood mothers. Before, being pregnant and giving birth were hidden in showbiz to protect the reputation of the actress. But now, more and more hollywood celebrities are showing the world that they are capable of domestic bliss.

An example is Angelina Jolie who just gave birth to her twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon. She is in the cover of the latest edition of W Magazine apparently breastfeeding. The picture is said to be taken by his partner Brad Pitt in their French chateau.

Some said it was inappropriate, but La Leche League International, the world's oldest breast-feeding support organization, applauds Jolie's apparent decision to be photographed nursing.

"Breast-feeding in public reveals a whole lot less than what has been revealed on the red carpet. ... I think we do need more role models like Angelina Jolie willing to be photographed and say, 'Hey look, it can be done, it oughta be done,'" said La Leche spokeswoman Jane Crouse.

Besides Shiloh and the twins, Pitt and Jolie also are parents to three adopted children: Maddox, 7, from Cambodia; Pax, 4, from Vietnam; Zahara, 3, from Ethiopia.

I was never a fan of Angelina Jolie, especially during the time when she was with Billy Bob Thornton. But when she portrayed Lara Croft and did Mr and Mrs Smith, she truly made me sit up and notice. Now that she is with Brad Pitt and is doing humanitarian work for the United Nations, she is proving that someone in Hollywood has a heart and every bit as human as you and me.

I am in the process of planning for my son's 1st birthday. To give me ideas, I asked my favorite source, the internet! Here's what I got so far. I got these ideas from http://www.ehow.com/

How to Plan a Kid's Birthday Party on a Budget

Step1

Decide how much you want to spend on your kid's birthday party.

- First step is crucial! I'm hoping not to spend to much. hehehe

Step2

Make a list of the things that you'd like to have at the party--balloons, cake, party favors, games--and then decide how important each item is to the success of the party. Are there things that you could eliminate to save money?

- I would like lots of balloons in red, white, and black. I've decided on a Disney Cars theme for my son since he really likes to be behind the wheel (he always wants to grab the wheel when we're in the car. of course, we usually give it to him when we're in the parking lot). The cake will be a gift from my son's godparents, party favors - i'll get them from the very reliable Divisoria, and games - I want to do a pabitin for the party. The other games will be up to the party host.

Step3

Brainstorm ways to limit the cost of the must-have items on your list. Could you make invitations instead of buying them? Do cake and ice cream instead of a full meal? Buy plain plates instead of licensed character plates? Blow up balloons instead of buying helium ones?

- I am hoping that a friend would make the invites, gift tags as a birthday gift, so that would eliminate one cost. I don't know how to blow up balloons, tricky!

Step4

Choose an affordable location for the party. Parties at pizza places, putt-putt courses and jump facilities are nice, but they'll add to the party tab. Think about having your kid's party at home or at a free destination like the park. This will free up more money for the rest of your party expenses.

- Hmm, I'm thinking of having it in a nice big resto (so that if the guest would double in size, at least there is ample space) with good party amenities and would give us a good price.

Step5

Limit the number of people that you invite. A smaller party is generally cheaper to throw, and could help you to stretch your budget further.

- Hard to do that now since most people don't honor rsvps. =)

Step6

Decorate with what you have. Before you run out to buy a bunch of party decorations, look around your house to see what you have that might work. Leftover supplies from previous parties can help to shorten your shopping list; and if you're throwing a character-themed party, all of those stuffed animals and toys in your kid's room can be used to set the theme.

- Again, divisoria is the answer

Step7

Involve the birthday girl or boy in the party planning process. What you think your child wants, and what your child actually wants may be very different things. Work through the planning process together, and you'll ensure that your money goes towards the things that matter

- I hope by this time he could talk some sense into mommy! hehehe.

* Answering every step is very therapeutic. Hay! I could at least heave a sigh of relief. With all the preparations I've been making, I hope everything would run smoothly.

The Verdict: Hubby's Birthday Part 3

I really wanted it to be special. But, time did not permit me to cook the food that I have chosen. How sad! Sob! Sob! My plan for the day was to go to the grocery to buy the ingredients after going to my son's pedia. But when we arrived at the clinic, there were a lot of kids! It looked like a children's party. During my almost 10 months of going there, that was the first time it was so packed! So what we did was to invite my parents and sister for lunch at a resto nearby (coz I was too tired to cook) and that's where we celebrated my hubby's birthday. We ate at North Park in P. Guevarra coz it was near my pedia's clinic. Food was yummy, but of course, it would have been better if I cooked it. hehehe. Anyway, I will try to cook those yummy treats when time permits.

Planning my Hubby's Birthday Part 2

Chicken with Tomatoes and Mushroom

Ingredients
Serves 4

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, about 1 1/2 pounds
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound mushrooms, trimmed and quartered
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (14.5 ounces) stewed tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

Directions

Season chicken with salt and pepper. In a large (5-quart) saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, heat oil over medium-high heat; swirl to coat bottom of pan. Cook chicken, turning when it easily releases from the pan, until golden, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
Add mushrooms; cover, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, tomatoes, and oregano. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, covered, until tomatoes have broken down, 10 to 15 minutes.
Return chicken and any accumulated juices to pan; cover, and cook until chicken is opaque throughout, 4 to 6 minutes. Turn chicken to coat with sauce, and serve.

Planning my Hubby's Birthday

I am planning on cooking dinner for my husband's upcoming birthday which is on sat! I have watched countless episodes of Everyday Italian and Barefoot Contessa (these are their recipes respectively) so I think I already got the necessary experience. Hehehe. I got this two recipes from the Food Network website and both can be made in less than 10 minutes. Dessert...well, I'll just buy a cake somewhere....

Spaghetti with Garlic, Olive Oil, and Red Pepper Flakes

Ingredients

1 pound dried spaghetti
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 garlic cloves, peeled
1 tablespoon red pepper flakes, plus more if desired
1/4 cup chopped Italian flat-leaf parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves

Directions

In a large pot, bring to a boil 6 quarts of salted water. Add pasta and cook until al dente, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain pasta in a colander, reserving 2 tablespoons of the pasta water. The reserved pasta water will help create the sauce. Do not rinse pasta with water -- you want to retain the pasta's natural starches so that the sauce will stick.
In a large saute pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and saute until light brown and fragrant. It's important not too burn the garlic or else it will become bitter. Remove and discard the browned garlic. Add the red pepper flakes and saute for 1 minute. Carefully add the reserved pasta water and stir to combine. Place the spaghetti into the pan and mix well for 1 minute.
Remove pan from heat and top with fresh herbs.

Parmesan Chicken

Ingredients

4 to 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 extra-large eggs
1 tablespoon water
1 1/4 cups seasoned dry bread crumbs
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan, plus extra for serving
Unsalted butter
Good olive oil
Salad greens for 6, washed and spun dry
1 recipe Lemon Vinaigrette, recipe follows

Directions

Pound the chicken breasts until they are 1/4-inch thick. You can use either a meat mallet or a rolling pin.
Combine the flour, salt, and pepper on a dinner plate. On a second plate, beat the eggs with 1 tablespoon of water. On a third plate, combine the bread crumbs and 1/2 cup grated Parmesan. Coat the chicken breasts on both sides with the flour mixture, then dip both sides into the egg mixture and dredge both sides in the bread-crumb mixture, pressing lightly.
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large saute pan and cook 2 or 3 chicken breasts on medium-low heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until cooked through. Add more butter and oil and cook the rest of the chicken breasts. Toss the salad greens with lemon vinaigrette. Place a mound of salad on each hot chicken breast. Serve with extra grated Parmesan.

Lemon Vinaigrette:
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons)
1/2 cup good olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

I was watching Martha Stewart awhile ago and was amazed to see Sarah Brightman cooking! I was really intrigued that she can be down-to-earth (although I don't think she can cook). I only know her for singing most of the songs in the Phantom of the Opera (thanks to ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber) and for making music videos that are fantasy-like borderline edgy (really gothic, amazing backgrounds). There was I time I was "hypnotized" by her rendition of "Think of Me" that I would keep repeating it on my iPod. Her voice is pure eerie that it would send chills up my spine everytime I hear her sing. She is promoting her new album titled Symphony which boasts of an exciting mix of classical, pop, and rock. With her beautiful voice and face, I think this new album would be a great hit again.

Fear for the Unknown

Why are we scared of the future, the inevitable, the unknown? Maybe because we don't know what we'll gonna find. We don't know what to expect. We are afraid to be caught off-guard.

I am venturing into the unknown. Soon, it will be upon me. I'm going to go out of my safety zone. I will voyage to living independently from my parents and live in bliss (hopefully) with my husband and son in the province.

Hay, to go out into a place where you have no friends, limited shopping malls, idle time in your hands.

Being born and raised in Manila, it would really be a change of atmosphere for me. Yes, I've lived alone during my college days. Going all the way to the mountains of Dasmarinas. But that is a different story. I was single then, thinking only of myself. Now, I have a family and I am moving away from them.

On the other hand, why should I be afraid? I have my husband and son with me. We will face whatever unknown we will encounter. I guess, my parents felt the same way when they moved out of their homes and had us.

What will the future bring? Only time will tell. I'll pray to God and ask him for a nice transition period and a blissful life ahead.

When Lovers Become Friends

What happens when you fall out of love with someone? Or that someone falls out of love with you? You part ways and become an individual again, single, I mean. How do you go about with life knowing that there is someone out there who was one time a part of you? Do you end up hating each other or become friends? Questions I once pondered, answered by an article I read last sunday. Yup, separation is tough. You go about your day depressed and alone, with no one to console you but yourself. You either hate that person who hurt you or ponder on what have gone wrong and ask yourself what you contributed to destroy that relationship. I don't think I speak for myself when I ask these questions. Many of us went through this path in our lives. But what did you do? Did you befriend that person again or did you forget his/her existence? I did not forget. You learn from every relationship, so why forget about it? It has made me what I am today (what a cliche). But true enough, every mistake makes you stronger (another cliche). I did not forget, we are friends, but I haven't seem him since. So my testament would be tested when I cross that bridge. . . . . to be continued.....

Memories of Puerto Princesa

I remember going to Puerto Princesa on the summer of 2007. I was not yet married to my husband (seen in photo, hehe) and I was not yet a mommy. We checked-in at Asturias Hotel and stayed there for 5 days. In visiting the city, one should try their day tour which includes a visit to their crocodile farm, identifying different types of butterflies in their butterfly garden, eating vietnamese food in their Vietnamese town, and going to Iwahig prison where inmates live with their families in a so-called rehabilitation area. Puerto Princesa is also famous for their beaches. Island hopping in Honday Bay, or arranging a day tour in Dos Palmas (like we did) is the way to go. Of course, if you have the extra time and money, you should try snorkeling in Tubbattaha reefs or experience safari at the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. Since we were on a regular tour, we did a day tour, went swimming and snorkeling at Dos Palmas Resort, and got amazed at the Underground Subterranean River National Park. Puerto Princesa truly is a great destination. I do hope we could go back someday.

Only one word comes to mind....Romance! A city filled with beautiful architectural sites, magnificent city landscapes, and great food. One would be amazed by the most beautiful avenue that is Champs-Élysées and the beautiful Arc de Triomphe. If shopping is in your itinerary, the Avenue Montaigne is the home of luxury brands such as Chanel, Loius Vitton, Dior and Givenchy. Of course, one should not miss the Notre Dame in Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Missing any of these spots would mean not going to Paris at all.

Paris, my weekend destination to date. Someday, I'll come see you.

It's reality show season again! I for one is a huge fan of Amazing Race ( either in America or Asia). Although I like the American version more because their contestants are much aggressive, competitive, and they are really edgier compared to their asian counterparts. I did enjoy the last season of Amazing Race Asia though because I thought Marc Nelson and Rovilson could win the title. Sadly, they were disastrous on the last leg which caused them to fail miserably. I was actually disappointed with Rovilson, it was pure agony! Nway, a new season of the Amazing Race Asia is being televised. It started last week, and I haven't watched it yet. I don't like the contestants, hehehe. I am intruiged by Survivor Phils., though. I'll try to watch their premier telecast tonight. I also liked their american version, until their scheming and back-stabbing becaming too irritating to watch. I do hope this Phil. version would not follow its american counterpart.

Jack the Ripper ( From Hell)

Just finished watching From Hell, a tale exploring the story of the famous serial killer "Jack the Ripper". For those who are not familiar with this person, he was serial killer who murdered and mutilated at least 5 prostitutes during the 1800's. No one was ever arrested though, increasing people's fascination about the case. In the movie, Johnny Depp is an investigator who tries who solve the crimes at the same time trying to vanquish his own demons. The killer in the movie is depicted by a doctor who does the crime for love of country (tries to cover a royal secret). Theoretically, we don't know if the movie is anywhere near the truth. Only the killer himself could attest to that fact.

Coping with Gestational Diabetes

This blog is for my sister (and for the other mommies diagnosed with this). She was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes on her 8th week of pregnancy (she is now on her 16th week). I want to enlighten her on what it's about and what she should expect in her pregnancy and to her baby

1) What is gestational diabetes? When is it detected?

It is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy. Usually detected during the 24-28 wks of pregnancy when you undergo a 1 hr 50g oral glucose challenge test (no need to fast).

2) What are the risk factors?

a) Age - greater than 30 yrs old
b) Family history
c) Obesity
d) Hypertension
e) Prior macrosomic baby ( more than 4500g)
f) Prior stillborn or malformed infant

3) How can gestational diabetes affect my baby?

If left untreated, your child may have low blood sugar level, jaundice, increased weight (making it more likely to have a CS).

4) What should be done if you are diagnosed with GDM?

a) Diet - cornerstone treatment for GDM. Avoid eating foods that contain a lot of simple sugar, such as cake, cookies, candy or ice cream. Instead, eat foods that contain natural sugars, such as fruits. If you get hungry between meals, eat foods that are healthy for you, such as raisins, carrot sticks or a piece of fruit. Whole-grain pasta, whole-grain breads and rice are also good for both you and your baby. It's important to eat well-balanced meals.
b) Exercise - use only the upper muscles to prevent excessive weight bearing load to lower body to avoid fetal distress. Exercise will help keep your blood sugar level normal, and it can also make you feel better. It's effects will be apparent within 4 weeks.
c) Insulin - given if fasting hyperglycemia is more than 105mg/dl despite dieting. Usually given before breakfast and dinner.

5) What should be expected after delivery?

GDM usually goes away after delivery, but to make sure, blood sugar level is measured 6-8wks after delivery. Usually a 2 hr, 75mg oral glucose tolerance test is done. Even if the gestational diabetes goes away after the baby's birth, it increases your risk for diabetes in your next pregnancy and also later in life. That is why it is important that you continue to exercise, watch your weight and eat a healthy diet after pregnancy. If you do these things, you may avoid diabetes when you're older.

1. Bits and Pieces by Jan :: I wish Gino and I will be able to convince friends to help us sponsor a simple Christmas party for the children of White Cross Children’s Home in San Juan.

2. The Wifey Diaries by Jannesse : My birthday falls on the 22nd of December. I have always wished to spend it with orphaned or abandoned kids. I’d be super happy to spend my birthday with them. That way, they get early Christmas presents from me. Oh, and can I wish for a baby, too? Please?

3. The Versoza Inc. by Con: I’d like to have a simple Christmas party for all the children of our employees. Times were hard on our company this 2007, but still, the Christmas Spirit should not be overpowered by it. Christmas is about family. So our Christmas party should not be for employees only, but for their families as well. Also, I wish our clan would make it a tradition to have a Christmas gift giving project. My Tita Doi started it last year with the Antipolo church children. I am looking forward to this year .

4. Mommy On Top: I wish I could help a couple of kids (both are related to my kids’ nannies) finish their education so they can, in turn, help their family earn a living. I could try and help them find a job, but without finishing their studies, they can only go too far. With a diploma or at least some certificate of formal education, they could do so much and reach farther. I hope my efforts in hooking them up with this certain NGO will come out with favorable results.

5. Coffeenchoclate : We hope to sustain an extended help for a few elders and be able to increase aid to another few elders before the year ends.

6) Footnotes and Paper Trails: I wish that we would have a great Christmas in our new home (we'll be moving to Tarlac before the year ends). I also hope for my son to have a great birthday (this december also). And that I could be able to provide and help my husband ( I need a job!)

Yes, I admit, I'm an addict. I love watching the lifestyle network! Eversince I laid eyes on Bobby Flay, hay, I was glued. Then came Mario Batali, Rachel Ray, Giada de Laurentiis, and Ina Garten. I know their schedule by heart and I never miss an episode. I even watch the reruns! And now, they are being featured the whole month of Sept. Every sunday, at 8 pm, their lives as a food network star will be revealed. So for those food network fanatics out there, don't miss out on this once in a lifetime treat!

I woke up today really early. I did my usual chores, ate my breakfast before my son woke up, checked my celfone for messages and sent a good morning message to my family. But after a few minutes, I still haven't received any reply. Could it be possible they're still sleeping? Nah! They wake up earlier than I do. So I waited until it became an hour. Out of frustration, I sent a txt message to myself. Lo and behold, I didn't receive my own message! Could globe be having some problems? So I called their customer service, which is 02-7391000, customer service was very apologetic, as they should be, and told me to set my message centre, etc., etc., and wait for 24 hrs until I get my messages. Duh, that's kinda long I said. But since they don't know what the problem is and they don't see anything wrong in my area, they told me to wait. Gosh, I don't have the patience to do so. So, to be able to forget their poor service, I started writing this blog. Hmm, I'm kinda simmering down, so to speak.

First Swim

This is my son's Xter's first time swimming with his Tatay. It was the day after my dad's birthday. We went to Bosa Resort in Angono, Rizal. The area was big, with 3 large pools, 3 kiddie pools, 2 slides, private pools, lots of parking, overnight accomodations, and it was a quick drive from our house in Cainta. Downside, the pool water was too cold. Maybe because it was the day after a big storm. So my son, who was so excited to swim, did so for only a few minutes. I did only long enough to get good photo-ops. Anyway, it was fun, and we all enjoyed our outing.

Dad's birthday

My dad recently celebrated his birthday last August 2. I know its kinda like 3 weeks ago, but hey, I am a new bloggie. I just registered yesterday. Anyway, we were planning to go swimming in Laguna. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and it was raining that day. So we opted to stay at home and eat all the lechon which dad ordered from Iloilo (which he picked at the airport that day). I, on the other hand, contributed the cake. I ordered it from Red Ribbon, and I just picked the design that could be done in 1 day. After devouring the lechon and the dinuguan that came with it, I took the cake from the ref, lighted the candle, and started singing happy birthday. Lo and behold, my dad, wanted my son to blow the candle. But rather than doing that, he placed his hand on the cake, making it all green and gooey. We all laughed of course, and it was a kodak moment, so to speak.

My yoga mat

Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India. I don't practice yoga. But its philosophy and mental attributes appeal to me. No, I don't have time for such "frivolous" exercise, meditation or whatever you would like to call it. My son, who is 8 months old keeps me limber and helps me stretch my muscles all the time. Him being like a "trumpo" who turns and turns and jumps and jumps all the time. This is obviously my first post, so pardon me for the short input. Till next time! =)
